What are breathwork classes?
You might be wondering what a breathwork class is. Or even what happens during a breathwork class?
Breathwork has been gaining popularity and attention for its potential health and wellness benefits over the years. I’ll be the first to tell you, it’s not new, it’s not trendy, and it certainly isn’t a fad. First thing to remember is breathwork has been practiced for over 5,000 years in many different cultures and areas of the world.
Practicing yoga for 17 years was where my interest in breathwork began. It wasn’t until meeting my mentor, Jayaprada Radhika, that my interest got serious and deepened my knowledge in connecting to the breath. She introduced me to the real world of breathwork, the power it has to be the catalyst for change in your mind AND your body. Incorporating what she taught me, my as asanas were deeper than ever thought possible! When I listen to Radhika speak, I was blown away by her vast knowledge which comes from her training by Sri Arya Ramesh Sheeti, as well as a baba in the Himalayas before she became a Bramacarini initiated by Bhakti Charu Swami. If you haven’t already done, it, you should click her name above and read about her, she is an incredible woman in so many different facets of life.
Now you’ve probably heard about breathwork, maybe you’ve even watched a video on YouTube… But if you’ve never taken a class and might be wondering what a breathwork class is, I’ve got you. The unknown can be scary, so let me break it down for you…
Breathwork classes are structured sessions led by trained instructors or facilitators, like myself, who guide participants through various breathing techniques and exercises. These classes can take different forms, catering to different goals and preferences.
Here’s an overview of what you might find in breathwork classes:
- Instruction and guidance: Instructors provide clear instructions on how to perform specific breathing techniques. They guide participants on breath control, pace, and other elements to ensure proper execution.
- Breathing exercises: Classes typically include a variety of breathing exercises, ranging from deep diaphragmatic breathing to more advanced practices like Holotropic Breathwork or Wim Hof Method. The choice of techniques depends on the class’s goals and the instructor’s expertise and training.
- Mindfulness and meditation: Many breathwork classes incorporate mindfulness and meditation elements. My participants are encouraged to be present in the moment, fostering a deeper mind-body connection.
- Physical movement: Some classes may include gentle movement or yoga postures to complement the breathwork, enhancing the overall mind-body experience.
- Emphasis on safety: Instructors often emphasize the importance of safety during breathwork sessions. This includes proper body positioning, potential side effects, and guidelines for individuals with specific health concerns.
- Group dynamics: The group setting can enhance the experience as participants share energy and support. During this time, instructors may create a safe and welcoming space for individuals to explore and express emotions that may arise during the practice.
- Variety of formats: Breathwork classes can be found in various formats, including in-person classes, online sessions, workshops, and retreats. The format may influence the duration, intensity, and focus of the breathwork experience.
- Integration and discussion: Some classes incorporate time for participants to share their experiences or ask questions. Instructors may offer insights into the physiological and psychological aspects of breathwork, fostering a better understanding of its benefits.
Attending breathwork classes can provide an opportunity to learn and experience different techniques under the guidance of an expert. Classes are a valuable way to deepen one’s practice. You can also receive personalized feedback, and connect with a community of like-minded individuals.
For those reading this that have attempted to meditate and struggled, I would highly recommend breathwork.
